SUMMARY:Profs & Pints Richmond: Social Media to Social Reckoning
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints Richmond presents: “Social Media to Social Reckoning\,” a talk about how Big Tech social media platforms operate and affect our world\, with Caddie Alford\, leading digital rhetoric scholar\, associate professor of rhetoric\, and co-lead of the AI Futures Hub at Virginia Commonwealth University. \nLearn what social media platforms attempt to get us to think and feel\, and assess the impact that their algorithms are having on our social lives and democracy\, with Caddie Alford\, a scholar of persuasion vis-à-vis Big Tech’s power. \nApplying the ancient art of rhetoric to social media platforms and what’s billed as “artificial intelligence\,” she’ll offer insights on the beliefs held by AI company CEOs and on the changes that Elon Musk made to Twitter. She’ll discuss concepts like cyberlibertarianism\, technofascism\, and “data trauma\,” and she’ll call attention to the relationship between how we talk about social media and how we use it. If you started out “surfing the web” but now find yourself “doomscrolling\,” her talk will help you understand why. \nDr. Alford will shed light on the discrepancies between how Big Tech social media companies portray themselves and how they actually operate. No matter how much they characterize social media platforms as “ecosystems\,” the platforms’ true purpose is harvesting our data for shareholder value. \nWe’ll look at how the story of AI is deeply intertwined with the story of the internet\, and how the political agendas of Big Tech social media companies are actualized by the material realities of computing infrastructure\, contingent labor\, and other considerations. \nWe’ll close by discussing how social media users are pushing back at Big Tech and its justifications for its policies and agendas. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) \nAbout Profs & Pints: \nDo you love to learn? Would you enjoy hearing scholars discuss fascinating topics in a setting where you can ask questions and be around people who share your interests? Profs and Pints is here for you!\n\nProfs and Pints brings college faculty members into bars\, cafés\, company offices\, and other off-campus venues to share their knowledge. They speak on subjects of broad interest\, including local history\, their region’s environment\, emerging trends in business or politics\, and the ideas and innovations transforming our society and culture. In addition\, Profs and Pints instructors offer practical instruction that improves lives. They can teach skills such as how to write persuasively\, plant a garden\, tend to mind and body\, or plan for retirement.\n\nProfs and Pints offers you all of this without asking that\nyou apply for admission\, pay steep tuition\, or worry about\nquizzes or grades. At most\, you might need to buy a\nmodestly priced ticket to get in the door. Depending on\nwhere the event is staged\, you may be able to order tasty\nbeers\, delicious meals\, or hot espresso to go with all of\nthat knowledge you’ll take in.\n\nYou won’t earn college credits but you’ll leave knowing more.

SUMMARY:The Half Life Launch with Rachel Beanland
DESCRIPTION:Local favorite Rachel is launching her next novel! She will be talking with Kevin Powers at VCU’s Cabell Library. \nEach ticket includes a signed copy of The Half Life! \nThere is a separate ticket for an online-only event\, since this will be broadcast from the library. Please see the separate event for that ticket if you cannot make it in person. \nAbout the Book:\nWhen twenty-three-year-old Eileen O’Malley meets charismatic naval officer Paul Archer in a Charleston department store\, she doesn’t expect to fall so hard\, so fast. But Paul is funny and ambitious\, and soon\, Eileen’s got a ring on her finger and is following him to the tiny\, sun-drenched Mediterranean island of La Maddalena\, where Paul will be heading up Radiological Controls aboard a submarine tender. \nIn La Maddalena\, Eileen joins a makeshift community of navy wives who are hell-bent on making the island feel a little more like home. But for Eileen\, whose brother died in Vietnam\, home is a loaded word\, and as she settles into life on the island—taking Italian lessons and learning to make culurgiones—she begins to love the place for all the ways it is not like where she comes from. \nStill\, it doesn’t take long for Eileen to be confronted with the complexities of being an American abroad. The decision to send nuclear-powered subs into the La Maddalena Archipelago was a contentious one\, and the U.S. government is doing whatever it can to ensure that the island—not to mention all of Italy—doesn’t go communist in the next election. \nWhen Italian activists and scientists begin to sound the alarm about possible nuclear contamination in the water\, the island erupts in a series of protests\, made worse by the ongoing mishaps of the U.S. Navy. Soon\, Eileen’s marriage falters and her loyalties begin to shift as she is drawn into a web of secrets—and to a local journalist who forces her to imagine a life beyond the one she’s been handed. \nAtmospheric\, sexy\, and quietly defiant\, The Half Life is a story of love\, complicity\, and awakening—of one woman forced to choose between loyalty to her husband and country and to the Italian locals who show her the high cost of American exceptionalism. \nAbout the Author:\nRachel Beanland is the author of The House Is on Fire and Florence Adler Swims Forever\, which won the National Jewish Book Award for Debut Fiction. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and earned her MFA in creative writing from Virginia Commonwealth University. She lives with her family in Richmond\, Virginia. \nKevin Powers was born and raised in Richmond\, Virginia. Since publishing his first novel in 2012\, his books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. He has been a finalist for the National Book Award and a recipient of the PEN/Hemingway Award\, the Guardian First Book Award\, the Prix littéraire du Monde prix étranger\, and the Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine\, among other recognitions. He was a James A. Michener Fellow in Poetry at the University of Texas at Austin from 2009-2012 and later held a Guggenheim Fellowship in Fiction. A U.S. Army veteran of the war in Iraq\, Kevin now lives on Florida’s First Coast with his family.

SUMMARY:Between Us: A space to unwind\, reflect\, and talk about life at Lavender Hill
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nBetween us is a cozy\, living room style conversation with guided prompts and open discussion for women who crave meaningful connection.\nBetween Us is a cozy\, living room style conversation where thoughtful discussion prompts create space for open dialogue and meaningful connection. Not a networking event. Not a girls’ night. Something slower\, softer\, and more honest than either. A curated gathering where conversation is the experience — where you’re invited to reflect\, speak freely\, and leave feeling more like yourself than when you walked in. No agenda beyond connection. No performance required. Whether you’re processing something quietyly or ready to open up\, you’ll find a group who holds space for wherever you are. \nDiscussion Topics\nJune 17 – How do you define community in this season of life?\nJuly 15 – What’s required for job hunting and finding new clients in today’s market?\nAugust 19 – How do you define success?\nSeptember 16 – How can you care for others without losing yourself? \nWhat to Expect\nBetween Us is designed to feel like an exhale.\nWhen you arrive\, you’ll be welcomed into a warm\, unhurried space where the first hour is yours — good food\, easy conversation\, and the chance to simply settle in before anything begins. No icebreakers. No name tags. Just the natural ease that comes from sharing a bite with women who showed up for the same reason you did – to slow down and have a meaningful conversation.\nWhen we move into our living room discussion\, the conversation is guided but never forced. Each gathering centers on a single theme — something worth sitting with\, not rushing through. You’re invited to speak when you’re ready and listen when you’re not. There is no wrong way to participate.\nYou won’t leave with a to-do list or a set of takeaways. You’ll leave with something quieter and more lasting — a reminder of what it feels like to be in a room where honesty is welcome and your presence matters.\nDress comfortably. Come as you are. Pull up a chair\, we’d love to have you. \nA Few Things to Know Before We Gather\nBecause Between Us is centered around thoughtful conversation and genuine connection\, we want to be intentional about creating a space that feels comfortable and welcoming for everyone involved.\nFor future gatherings\, we plan to keep photography and recording minimal. However\, for the very first conversation\, portions of the evening will be recorded or photographed to help us introduce and thoughtfully market the series moving forward. We will always do our best to be respectful of the atmosphere and the privacy of those attending.\nAs one of our first invited participants\, we’d also love to thank you for helping us shape this experience by sharing a meal together before the conversation begins. Future gatherings will always include refreshments\, but for this first evening\, we wanted to create a slower\, more intentional gathering experience from the moment you arrive.

SUMMARY:Los Trompos at Short Pump Town Center
DESCRIPTION:“Los Trompos” (“Spinning Tops” in Spanish) draws its inspiration from a toy that has been popular with children around the world since the dawn of time. This large-scale\, interactive artistic installation engages visitors in a way that is both meaningful and playful. \nLos Trompos features a set of larger-than-life\, three-dimensional spinning tops in a variety of colors and shapes. The colorful surfaces of each top are created in part by fabric woven in a traditional Mexican style. The fabric is stretched over the modules to seat several people at once. \nFunctioning as both artwork and rotating platform\, each sculpture acts as a gathering place for relaxation\, social interaction and entertainment. By working together to create momentum\, visitors can spin the tops on their bases. Through interaction and collaboration\, Los Trompos comes to life and gives new meaning to the art of play.

Your attendance is not! \nContribute to expanding access to affordable housing from the comfort of your own home. Create brighter futures for youth\, families\, and seniors with just the click of a button. Better Housing Coalition’s 9th Annual Non-Event Gala: Opening Doors to Success invites you to do just that.\nOn April 29th\, we are rallying together to raise $75\,000 in support of BHC’s mission and the individuals and families we serve. There is no ticket to purchase and no dress code – just a shared commitment to providing stability\, opportunity\, and hope.\nYour gift on April 29th helps open more doors: to a safe and affordable home\, to financial stability\, and to a brighter future for our residents and community.\nWhat is the Non-Event Gala? Now in its 9th year\, BHC launched Richmond’s first-ever Non-Event Gala to raise awareness and critical support for affordable housing in our region. Instead of attending a traditional fundraising event\, supporters are invited to make a fully tax-deductible gift -no program to sit through\, no travel to a venue\, no suit to rent or dress to purchase. Just meaningful impact\, made simple through your gift.\nEvery dollar supports families and senior residents in your community! \nWhy should I support the Better Housing Coalition? With eviction rates and housing costs ever increasing across Greater Richmond\, gaining and maintaining quality affordable housing can seem like an unattainable feat for those financially burdened. At BHC\, we work to provide high-quality\, healthy homes and crucial support services to help the 2\,800+ individuals living in a BHC rental community – regardless of their economic status – reach their fullest potential. Housing is the leading determinant for future economic\, education\, and employment success. Where you live can change your life.\nBy supporting Opening Doors to Success\, you’re making a direct investment in safe\, affordable housing and the programs that help BHC residents thrive! \nMAKE A GIFT TODAY! \nMany thanks to these generous business partners and individuals who support service-enriched\, affordable housing in their communities! \nInterested in sponsoring this year’s Non-Event Gala? Email Anne Hurt\, a.hurt@betterhousingcoalition.org for more information on how you can make a lasting impact.

SUMMARY:Virginia Film Festival: Shenandoah World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere \nWitness the majesty of Shenandoah National Park through this mesmerizing\, grand\, and personal documentary. In 2019\, Shenandoah National Park granted Virginia’s Orange Frame Productions exclusive access to film anywhere within the park. During this time\, the OFP team scuba dived into mountain caves to film the elusive American eel\, climbed cliff faces to witness a peregrine falcon’s first flight\, and ventured far off the beaten path to discover the endangered Shenandoah salamander. \nThe Appalachian Mountains is a place shaped by ongoing formations\, migrations\, and transformations. This constant change is driven by the region’s diverse species\, geology\, and human history\, which all play a role in the story of Shenandoah’s lush and fragile wilderness—a place that has evolved for millions of years and continues to adapt today. With stunning cinematography from two renowned National Geographic filmmakers\, the film also explores the history of the park itself\, chronicling how the physical landscape and its cultural impact has shifted over time. \nThe film is dedicated to late director Jeff Boedeker\, who unexpectedly passed away during production. Harnessing Jeff’s vision\, Anna Boedeker (owner of Orange Frame Productions) continued the project as executive producer\, embodying his inspired pursuit to share never-before-seen perspectives of this unbelievable world. \nIntroduction by co-executive producer Anna Boedeker. \nDiscussion with director Elizabeth Crowl\, Evan Childress (Division Chief of Natural and Cultural Resources\, Shenandoah National Park)\, Claire Comer (Interpretive Specialist\, Shenandoah National Park)\, and Robert Cox (UVA)\, moderated by co-executive producer Steve Humble (VPM).
