SUMMARY:Women Who Code Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:Algorithm (n.) – a set of step-by-step instructions for solving a task \nIf you have ever followed a recipe or given someone driving directions\, you have used an algorithm. Algorithms are used in computer science to solve problems ranging from sorting to programming self-driving cars. In this meetup\, we will strengthen our problem-solving skills and logical thinking by solving an algorithm challenge. \nAll levels are welcome\, including beginners. The challenges can be solved in the language of your choosing. \nLaptops are strongly encouraged\, but not required. \nParking is available in the lot on 6th and Bainbridge or on the street.

SUMMARY:Richmond Sharepoint Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Synergy Technical is an industry-leading Microsoft partner\, delivering comprehensive cloud solutions that meet the needs of today’s highly connected and interactive organizations. We are a Microsoft Gold Cloud Platform Partner\, as well as a certified Cloud Deployment partner. Our portfolio includes Office 365 (Exchange Online\, SharePoint Online\, and Skype for Business)\, custom web application development\, integration and maintenance\, as well as Azure Infrastructure as a Service and Platform as a Service. \nTopic: The Modern UX is SharePoint’s Future \nThe game has changed and SharePoint’s Modern user experience is here to stay.  Companies using SharePoint Online may have found it frustrating over the past three years as Microsoft has slowly built a completely and dramatically new user interface for SharePoint\, and deployed it piecemeal alongside the old Classic user experience.  But today\, the Modern UX is complete and ready for business\, and it continues to get better and better\, offering features and experiences that users of the Classic UX can only dream of.  It’s also no longer just for the cloud version of SharePoint\, as SharePoint Server 2019 brings the Modern UX to the on-prem world as well. \nClassic isn’t going anywhere—in the near future\, at least—but Modern is here and it’s the future\, so if your company uses SharePoint\, you need to know what the Modern UX is\, how it’s different from Classic\, and what you’ll need to do to begin taking advantage of it.  We hope you’ll join us as we discuss these and a few related topics. \nSpeaker: Brandon Murray \nBrandon Murray is a Solutions Architect with Synergy Technical in Richmond\, Virginia.  He has worked with SharePoint since the ancient days of MOSS 2007\, specializing in using SharePoint as a platform to design and build solutions to business needs.  As a consultant who started in SharePoint Server then transitioned to SharePoint Online\, Brandon has had a front-row seat as the tech world experienced a dramatic shift in recent years from the classic on-prem model to what Microsoft has dubbed a “mobile-first\, cloud-first” model.  Despite the incredible potential in today’s technologies\, complexity and challenges remain\, and Brandon has used his unique background to help his clients bridge the gap between the business and technology worlds. \nBrandon currently lives in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley with his wife\, Colleen\, and four kids. \n

SUMMARY:Book Launch & Signing with Tiffany Jana and Ashley Diaz Mejias!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book discussion & signing with Tiffany Jana & Ashley Diaz Mejias in celebration of their new book Erasing Institutional Bias: How to Create Systemic Change for Organizational Inclusion. Free & open to the public. \nAbout the book: All humans have bias\, and as a result\, so do the institutions we build. Internationally sought after diversity consultant Tiffany Jana offers concrete ways for anyone to work against institutional bias no matter what their position is in an organization. \nWhile it is easy to identify intentionally built systems of oppression like Jim Crow or the paralysis caused by the glass ceiling for women in the workplace\, confronting systems that perpetuate subtle\, unconscious bias is much harder. Erasing Institutional Bias will help people tackle structural bias regardless of their positional power. Eliminating systemic bias can seem an insurmountable task from the vantage point of an ordinary individual\, yet Jana and Mejias empower readers to recognize that each of us has the ability to affect systemic bias through a deliberate\, coordinated effort. Institutional bias afflicts all industries –including business\, education\, health care\, government\, tech\, the arts\, nonprofits\, and finance and banking. Among the types of institutional bias addressed are hiring bias\, gender bias\, racial bias\, occupational bias\, and customer bias. Jana and Mejias focus their attention on bias in the workplace and give readers practices and activities to create organizational trust to challenge these implicit biases. Erasing Institutional Bias will help people recognize that each of us has the power to affect systemic bias. Each of us can evaluate our own current role in perpetuating systemic bias and define our new role in breaking down systemic bias.

SUMMARY:Innovation Series: The Future of RVA with BridgePark
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2018 HYPE Innovation Series \nHow do we stay innovative when it comes to workplace culture\, building community relationships and keeping up with the continued growth of technology? Join us as we hear from some of Richmond’s corporations on how they encourage innovation amongst a generation filled with creative minds. \nSponsored By:  \nTHIS EVENT: \nParks should connect people. As head of the BridgePark project\, Ted Elmore\, will explore his novel idea of turning a downtown bridge\, designed for automobiles\, into a park. He outlines how designing with the community is bringing neighbors closer and making a “bold idea even bolder.” \nTed and his team met with hundreds of community members to solicit ideas and feedback on the idea of a BridgePark across the James. In May 2014\, they hired local engineering firm\, The Timmons Group\, and local architecture firm\, Spatial Affairs Bureau\, to examine the community’s input and then collect data and analyze the proposed BridgePark site with that advice in mind. The study considers the existing conditions and opportunities provided by the natural landscape\, alongside the stated wants and needs of the community. \nHear his story\, see his vision\, and be a part of the change in RVA.

Documenting is not one of these activities\, but engaging in any of these activities yields artifacts—diagrams\, notes\, sketches\, lists\, inventories\, annotations\, and larger documents—that result from the act of performing the task. At the same time\, each task requires inputs\, and these artifacts that come from doing design are the same things that can help feed the design process. The success of the task directly relates to the quality of the inputs and may be measured on the quality of its outputs. So how does one effectively make use of these to communicate the fruits of their labors? \nBio:\nTalented user experience leader with 12 years of proven experience in the development and implementation of enterprise digital strategies\, user-centered research and systems design with clients such as AARP\, Annie E. SUMMARY:Creative Mornings RVA-Chaos
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re taking a field trip to our OG partner Capital One’s West Creek campus! It’s such a cool space and we’re all in a tizzy over it. It’s even winning awards. Check out some photos by clicking the image below. \n \nFew things excite Matt Brehony more than a messy problem in need of a creative solution. While this passion may have landed him in some sketchy romantic relationships early in life\, it has served him well as a brand consultant. Through his work with Joe Smith Brand Consultancy\, Matt has led successful projects for companies of all kinds—from Fortune 500s to scrappy start-ups—with a list of clients that includes Clif Bar & Company\, Capital One\, GE\, Virginia Wine\, Sprint\, Beale’s Brewery\, Pratt & Whitney and more. \nMatt is an immensely gifted writer (he even wrote this bio) and all-around renaissance man. As an actor\, his role as “that guy in those gym commercials” inspired several Virginians to get back on the elliptical. As a songwriter\, he’s been called “the voice of a generation” by his dad. And\, as a singer\, his one-man rendition of the entire Hamilton soundtrack was arguably the highlight of a six-hour drive to Pittsburgh with his family. \nThese days\, when he’s not concocting creative solutions for clients\, Matt can be found trying to score a date with his wife\, very slowly chipping away on a solo album and dealing with another variety of messy problems–raising triplet sons.

SUMMARY:Faison Center's Endless Summer Party
DESCRIPTION:The fundraiser will be on the evening of Friday\, September 7\, 2018. \nFor those of you who don’t know about Faison Center\, the nonprofit gives children and adults with autism and related challenges the best opportunity to live rich and fulfilling lives. From early intervention to adult care\, Faison is committed to improving the lives of individuals with autism. \nAutism affects more children than childhood cancers\, cystic fibrosis and multiple sclerosis combined. One in 68 children in the U.S. has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder\, and approximately one in six children has some type of developmental disability\, according to the Center for Disease Control. \nThe Faison Center provides services not just for Richmond residents\, but for children and adults across Virginia. Faison’s reach also is national: the nonprofit is affiliated with two major university research partners — the Applied Behavior Analysis Program at Columbia University’s Teachers College and the Department of Behavioral Psychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute.
