SUMMARY:Innovation Series: The Future of RVA with BridgePark
DESCRIPTION:The Fall 2018 HYPE Innovation Series \nHow do we stay innovative when it comes to workplace culture\, building community relationships and keeping up with the continued growth of technology? Join us as we hear from some of Richmond’s corporations on how they encourage innovation amongst a generation filled with creative minds. \nSponsored By:  \nTHIS EVENT: \nParks should connect people. As head of the BridgePark project\, Ted Elmore\, will explore his novel idea of turning a downtown bridge\, designed for automobiles\, into a park. He outlines how designing with the community is bringing neighbors closer and making a “bold idea even bolder.” \nTed and his team met with hundreds of community members to solicit ideas and feedback on the idea of a BridgePark across the James. In May 2014\, they hired local engineering firm\, The Timmons Group\, and local architecture firm\, Spatial Affairs Bureau\, to examine the community’s input and then collect data and analyze the proposed BridgePark site with that advice in mind. The study considers the existing conditions and opportunities provided by the natural landscape\, alongside the stated wants and needs of the community. \nHear his story\, see his vision\, and be a part of the change in RVA.

Documenting is not one of these activities\, but engaging in any of these activities yields artifacts—diagrams\, notes\, sketches\, lists\, inventories\, annotations\, and larger documents—that result from the act of performing the task. At the same time\, each task requires inputs\, and these artifacts that come from doing design are the same things that can help feed the design process. The success of the task directly relates to the quality of the inputs and may be measured on the quality of its outputs. So how does one effectively make use of these to communicate the fruits of their labors? \nBio:\nTalented user experience leader with 12 years of proven experience in the development and implementation of enterprise digital strategies\, user-centered research and systems design with clients such as AARP\, Annie E. Katie will use her own experiences to illustrate how accessible observational research can be. \nBio:\nKatie is a User Experience Researcher at Snag. Her work focuses on helping Snag’s product development teams gain a greater understanding of hourly workers and employers so they can design and build products that solve their users true pain points. SUMMARY:Creative Mornings RVA-Chaos
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re taking a field trip to our OG partner Capital One’s West Creek campus! It’s such a cool space and we’re all in a tizzy over it. It’s even winning awards. Check out some photos by clicking the image below. \n \nFew things excite Matt Brehony more than a messy problem in need of a creative solution. While this passion may have landed him in some sketchy romantic relationships early in life\, it has served him well as a brand consultant. Through his work with Joe Smith Brand Consultancy\, Matt has led successful projects for companies of all kinds—from Fortune 500s to scrappy start-ups—with a list of clients that includes Clif Bar & Company\, Capital One\, GE\, Virginia Wine\, Sprint\, Beale’s Brewery\, Pratt & Whitney and more. \nMatt is an immensely gifted writer (he even wrote this bio) and all-around renaissance man. As an actor\, his role as “that guy in those gym commercials” inspired several Virginians to get back on the elliptical. As a songwriter\, he’s been called “the voice of a generation” by his dad. And\, as a singer\, his one-man rendition of the entire Hamilton soundtrack was arguably the highlight of a six-hour drive to Pittsburgh with his family. \nThese days\, when he’s not concocting creative solutions for clients\, Matt can be found trying to score a date with his wife\, very slowly chipping away on a solo album and dealing with another variety of messy problems–raising triplet sons.

SUMMARY:Faison Center's Endless Summer Party
DESCRIPTION:The fundraiser will be on the evening of Friday\, September 7\, 2018. \nFor those of you who don’t know about Faison Center\, the nonprofit gives children and adults with autism and related challenges the best opportunity to live rich and fulfilling lives. From early intervention to adult care\, Faison is committed to improving the lives of individuals with autism. \nAutism affects more children than childhood cancers\, cystic fibrosis and multiple sclerosis combined. One in 68 children in the U.S. has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder\, and approximately one in six children has some type of developmental disability\, according to the Center for Disease Control. \nThe Faison Center provides services not just for Richmond residents\, but for children and adults across Virginia. Faison’s reach also is national: the nonprofit is affiliated with two major university research partners — the Applied Behavior Analysis Program at Columbia University’s Teachers College and the Department of Behavioral Psychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute.

SUMMARY:PRSA-How Storytelling Can Transform Your Organization
DESCRIPTION:Part one in a series of three events\, “How Storytelling Can Transform Your Organization” will take place on Tuesday\, August 28 from 8 – 10 a.m. at The Beet\, the community room at Ellwood Thompson’s (4 N. Thompson Street\, Richmond\, VA). This event is put on by the public service committee in an effort to better serve our non-profit chapter and community members. Upcoming events from the public service committee will build upon this event and will cover marketing and promotional efforts and measurement and ROI. \nAbout the Program\nTechnology\, economics\, politics\, society: Every aspect of our world is changing faster than ever before. And from multinational conglomerates to small boutiques\, more organizations are at risk for failure than any point in history. We—companies\, teams\, and human beings—must change too. We know this. It’s why we launch innovation programs\, design change initiatives\, and roll out new strategies. We all want to build a bridge to the future. \nThe good news: We know that we need to accelerate our ability to change. The bad news: Most of us are doing it wrong. \nMatt Johnson of The Frontier Project reveals the transformative power of story. Leveraging his experience as a published author and corporate storyteller\, Matt explains how storytelling can be your bridge to a brighter future. Whether you’re an organization facing disruption\, a team in conflict\, or a person feeling lost in your career\, Matt’s case studies and exercises will introduce you to the tools you need to write (and live) your new story. \nAbout the Speaker\nTrained mathematician\, former frontman of a punk rock band\, Pentagon policymaker\, and nonfiction author who performs his book live. There’s no fitting Matt Johnson into any sort of box. \nEqual parts left-brained strategist and creative troubadour\, Johnson is a lead consultant at The Frontier Project. When you want to zoom in to understand the details and then back out to discover a new way to put the puzzle together. For Matt\, that simplicity is not just a buzzword; it’s a lifestyle. Fueled by a need to do\, say\, and be more with less\, Matt drinks his coffee black\, keeps his emails short\, loves his music live\, and tries to listen more than he talks.

SUMMARY:PRSA: June Luncheon: Crisis Communication & Response
DESCRIPTION:About the Program\nCrisis situations can emerge at any time\, and rarely do organizations have time to plan for potentially volatile events. Each situation brings its own unique challenges that may require collaboration with external organizations; thorough research; and a proactive\, strategic response by all parties involved. Reflecting on real situations that have impacted Virginians in recent months (including the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville)\, a panel of local communications experts will lead a discussion on best practices – and lessons learned – for managing communications and response. \nThe panelists will include: \n– Corrine Gellar\, public relations director\, Virginia State Police \n– Jannell Hancock\, senior communications specialist\, Dominion Energy \n– Jonathan McNamara\, communications director\, American Red Cross \nMenu\nHoney BBQ Chicken with chef’s choice of sides and veggies with warm rolls and a selection of cookies for dessert. A choice of salad\, with or without meat\, is also available. Make your selection when registering\, and be sure to pick up your salad ticket upon checking in for the luncheon if you choose that option. \nRSVP Policy\nAll RSVPs for lunch meetings must be made by 5 p.m. on MONDAY of the week of a meeting. After that time\, members and guests will need to call Sara Hunt at (804) 994-1120 to see if space is still available or to be put on a waiting list if needed. Please RSVP early in order to ensure that you are included in the headcount for lunch! If you register as a guest and later determine that you cannot attend\, please contact Sara Hunt\, chapter administrator\, at admin@prsarichmond.org. You must cancel prior to three business days in advance of the meeting to be eligible for a refund. If you cancel after that deadline\, you will still be responsible for the lunch payment and will be billed if you didn’t already pay online. No-shows will be billed for the lunch.

SUMMARY:RVA WordPress Meetup

We are going to look at real world issues and tackle them together. \nThings you should know before attending. \n• Your WordPress admin credentials. \n• Your FTP credentials. \n• Your hosting provider credentials. (not required but defintiely awesome to have on hand.) \nOn behalf of RVA WordPress\, we look forward to seeing you!
