SUMMARY:Gretchen Rubin
DESCRIPTION:In her decade-long investigation into happiness and human nature\, Gretchen Rubin—the bestselling author of The Happiness Project\, Better Than Before\, and The Four Tendencies and host of the podcast “Happier with Gretchen Rubin”—has made a key realization about happiness: For most of us\, outer order contributes to inner calm. While a messy desk or overcrowded closet can seem like a trivial problem\, clearing clutter and organizing possessions can help many of us feel calmer and more energetic in all aspects of life. \nIn her new book\, Outer Order\, Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Make More Room For Happiness\, Rubin tackles the challenges of clearing clutter to help create a more peaceful\, pleasant\, and orderly environment\, and in turn make for happier\, healthier\, and more productive lives. \nWith more than 120 concrete tips and insights\, Outer Order\, Inner Calm explains how to “Make Choices\,” “Create Order\,” “Know Yourself and Others\,” “Cultivate Helpful Habits\,” and “Add Beauty.” In her research\, Rubin found that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach\, so she offers a multitude of ideas to allow readers to choose the suggestions that resonate most. \nAt home\, at work\, and in life\, by getting rid of things we don’t use\, don’t need\, or don’t love\, as well as things that don’t work\, don’t fit\, or don’t suit\, we free our mind (and our shelves) for what we truly value. Book signing to follow.

SUMMARY:Feb. 2019 DIY Journal Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are going to make a book together! We’ll be choosing covers\, papers and binding thread and sewing a DIY journal. I use mine to bullet journal but you can use it for anything really. \nYou will spend three hours in this fun\, hands on workshop learning to construct your own DIY journal. We will begin with envisioning how to use your journal for an intentional practice and I’ll show real examples of how I’ve used my handmade journals over the last 3 years. \nYou will select your cover color (numbered below) before the workshop. When you arrive\, we will select interior papers\, a spine and coordinating thread to bind your journal. \nThe steps we’ll take are – selecting our interior papers\, folding our signatures (the term for each section of your journal)\, using a tabletop trough to punch through each signature\, trimming the pages for a neat front edge\, rounding the interior paper corners\, and finally select our binding thread and securely sew our pages into the journal. \nYou will leave with a completed handmade journal and lots of ideas on how to use this in your daily life. No book making or bullet journaling experience is needed. The entire project is broken down into easy to follow steps\, and your journal cover and spine have already been prepared and set up for you. $55\, all materials included. To reserve your space\, Venmo @jolindaRVA with your journal cover choice. 15 participants\, max. If we sell out\, I will have another date in early March.

SUMMARY:CreativeMornings:Symmetry - Paul Cassimus
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker\n“I was once described as ‘awkwardly charming’\, and few compliments have ever been more true of me.” \nPaul moved to Richmond in 2009 to attend University of Richmond’s School of Continuing Studies to get a teaching license. A lover of languages (speaking Spanish and Greek\, and is of Greek heritage) and a passion for learning new things\, especially as it relates to new cultures\, drove him enter in the teaching profession. \nAfter two years in Henrico County teaching Spanish\, Paul started King of Pops\, a gourmet popsicle company that was founded in Atlanta by friends he met at University of Georgia. Starting with a single pop cart and a bunch of delicious flavors in 2012\, the King of Pops in Richmond grew to have a dozen carts\, 3 full time employees\, and over 30 part time employees by 2018. \nCurrently\, he is a freelance marketer and small business coach working with businesses on marketing strategies and helping business owners work smarter and manage better. \nPaul describes himself as at times\, a little shy and reserved with moments of monumental risk taking\, such as studying abroad in Greece for 2 semesters in college\, moving to NYC to work for 8 months (“just because it would be cool”)\, skydiving despite a fear of heights\, quitting a steady teaching job to work on a start-up business\, and then leaving the now stable\, profitable start-up business to pursue a new career path.

SUMMARY:Why React Hooks from Kent C. Dodds from Paypal
DESCRIPTION:This is going to be a very unique meetup as RVA.js will be holding a REMOTE presentation with Kent C. Dodds. Kent works at Paypal as a full stack JavaScript engineer. He represents PayPal on the TC39. He’s actively involved in the open source community. Kent is one of the most well-known speakers in the country and has done over 20 workshops\, almost 40 unique presentations/talks\, he’s an instructor at both Egghead.io\, FrontEnd Masters and Workshop.me and he has spoken at numerous major conferences. He is also one of only 90 Google Developer Experts within the Web Technologies area. \nAlthough Kent started out his career in Angular he switched over to React about three (3) years ago and has been solely focusing on React.js ever since! \nThis month’s meetup is going to be on Why React Hooks. Hooks is a brand new feature that came out EXPERIMENTALLY in version 16.7 and will be released fully in v.16.8. You may be asking yourself…. What exactly is Hooks?? Here is what it is and what it can do… \nReact Hooks are a groundbreaking feature in React that fundamentally change the way we create React applications. \nWhat do React Hooks change? Everything! \nNo need for class components! \nNo more this keyword! \nNo more Redux! \nNo more lifecycle methods! \nNo more props drilling! \nReact Hooks removes the need for all of these things! \nEven though this is a REMOTE presentation\, it will be just like a regular meetup. You will be able to see Kent\, hear Kent\, see the code on his machine and ask questions and get answers! We have limited space at 60 people\, so please RSVP and bring your questions! \nHere are a couple of VERY IMPORTANT NOTES to pay attention to. \n1. This event WILL NOT be live streamed. You are going to have to attend the meetup to learn directly from Kent.\n2. For this event only\, we will be meeting at Unboxed Training and Technology. Their address is below.
