SUMMARY:CreativeMornings:Symmetry - Paul Cassimus
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker\n“I was once described as ‘awkwardly charming’\, and few compliments have ever been more true of me.” \nPaul moved to Richmond in 2009 to attend University of Richmond’s School of Continuing Studies to get a teaching license. A lover of languages (speaking Spanish and Greek\, and is of Greek heritage) and a passion for learning new things\, especially as it relates to new cultures\, drove him enter in the teaching profession. \nAfter two years in Henrico County teaching Spanish\, Paul started King of Pops\, a gourmet popsicle company that was founded in Atlanta by friends he met at University of Georgia. Starting with a single pop cart and a bunch of delicious flavors in 2012\, the King of Pops in Richmond grew to have a dozen carts\, 3 full time employees\, and over 30 part time employees by 2018. \nCurrently\, he is a freelance marketer and small business coach working with businesses on marketing strategies and helping business owners work smarter and manage better. \nPaul describes himself as at times\, a little shy and reserved with moments of monumental risk taking\, such as studying abroad in Greece for 2 semesters in college\, moving to NYC to work for 8 months (“just because it would be cool”)\, skydiving despite a fear of heights\, quitting a steady teaching job to work on a start-up business\, and then leaving the now stable\, profitable start-up business to pursue a new career path.

SUMMARY:Why React Hooks from Kent C. Dodds from Paypal
DESCRIPTION:This is going to be a very unique meetup as RVA.js will be holding a REMOTE presentation with Kent C. Dodds. Kent works at Paypal as a full stack JavaScript engineer. He represents PayPal on the TC39. He’s actively involved in the open source community. Kent is one of the most well-known speakers in the country and has done over 20 workshops\, almost 40 unique presentations/talks\, he’s an instructor at both Egghead.io\, FrontEnd Masters and Workshop.me and he has spoken at numerous major conferences. He is also one of only 90 Google Developer Experts within the Web Technologies area. \nAlthough Kent started out his career in Angular he switched over to React about three (3) years ago and has been solely focusing on React.js ever since! \nThis month’s meetup is going to be on Why React Hooks. Hooks is a brand new feature that came out EXPERIMENTALLY in version 16.7 and will be released fully in v.16.8. You may be asking yourself…. What exactly is Hooks?? Here is what it is and what it can do… \nReact Hooks are a groundbreaking feature in React that fundamentally change the way we create React applications. \nWhat do React Hooks change? Everything! \nNo need for class components! \nNo more this keyword! \nNo more Redux! \nNo more lifecycle methods! \nNo more props drilling! \nReact Hooks removes the need for all of these things! \nEven though this is a REMOTE presentation\, it will be just like a regular meetup. You will be able to see Kent\, hear Kent\, see the code on his machine and ask questions and get answers! We have limited space at 60 people\, so please RSVP and bring your questions! \nHere are a couple of VERY IMPORTANT NOTES to pay attention to. \n1. This event WILL NOT be live streamed. You are going to have to attend the meetup to learn directly from Kent.\n2. For this event only\, we will be meeting at Unboxed Training and Technology. Their address is below.

SUMMARY:Civic Leadership & The Power of Getting Involved

Vanessa works with a coalition of community organizers\, business leaders\, institutions of higher education and government entities to help create a better ecosystem for civic engagement initiatives across our region. \n  \nVanessa will take us on a journey from understanding what your intrinsic passions are to figuring out how those align with community resources and opportunities for giving. You’ll learn about different ways to give with your time\, money and talent and gain insight into how to get the most out of volunteering from a networking and professional perspective. We’ve invited several local non-profit organizations that have boards for YPs to serve on\, and you’ll have an opportunity after Vanessa presents to learn more about those organizations. \n  \nWe’ll also have a special guest (and former HYPE speaker!)\, Becky Crump\, joining us to speak briefly about a new RVA initiative\, The Giving Wall.

It was there he was able to hone in on his own personal sense of style. \nUpon returning to Richmond\, Marcel worked several years alongside his father as a mental health support counselor\, including serving the Intellectually disabled population in the area. Intent on continuing to serve the community\, he joined the ranks of the Richmond Police Department. \nDuring the final stint of the academy\, he suffered a concussion and was no longer able to serve. After an unfortunate string of events\, original concepts and sketches that started as a therapeutic means of expression\, evolved into the current collection you see today. \nVia his brand X of Pentacles\, Marcel wishes to offers the world something that embodies craftsmanship\, respects tradition\, and serves as a tool to express your own individual narrative. \nMarcel’s main hobby has become his profession\, but he also enjoys cooking\, music\, film\, and currently serves as a Junior VACA Board Member for Vis-Arts here in Richmond.

SUMMARY:MakerEd brainstorm meeting

Dr. Eve Torrence from Randolph Macon has agreed to join us for an official meetup of the group to discuss how she uses making (specifically origami and crochet) in her math classes (date TBD). \nSome possible avenues for discussion for this meeting: Has “making” been too narrowly defined in an education context? Art teachers\, what ideas do you have for teachers of other disciplines? Makerspaces–guiding principles\, best practices\, buy-in? Community outreach in making through service projects\, school partnerships\, etc.? THERE WILL BE SNACKS AND COFFEE. \nTeresa has offered her classroom as our meeting spot. Hope to see you there.

SUMMARY:November Past President's Luncheon: Your Organization’s DNA - What’s Diversity Got To Do With It?
DESCRIPTION:About the Program\nDiversity and Inclusion (D&I) are not only buzzwords in the public relations industry\, but they are critical business strategies that can help your organization excel if they are part of the DNA of your brand. Join us as we welcome Rochelle Ford\, Ph.D.\, APR\, dean of Elon University’s School of Communications\, for an interactive session that will help communicators understand why D&I cannot solely be an HR function\, but should be part of an integrated strategy across all functional units\, including communication. Participants will be able to identify what diversity should mean beyond race and ethnicity\, and what strategies will help your organization to achieve an inclusive environment and be able to retain brand equity in the marketplace. \nAbout the Speaker\nRochelle Ford\, Ph.D.\, APR\, is a leading researcher and writer on current issues in diversity in communications. Prior to taking over as dean of Elon University’s School of Communications this summer\, Dr. Ford was a tenured professor and chair in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She also spent 16 years at Howard University as a professor in the School of Communications. Dr. Ford has received numerous accolades\, including PRSA National Capital Chapter’s Diversity Champion Award and PRSA National’s Parke Gibson Multiculturalism Award. Earlier this month\, PR Week elected Dr. Ford among six “industry legends” in its annual Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to the communications industry. In addition to serving on the boards of the PRSA Foundation\, PRSA National and the American Advertising Federation’s Mosaic Center\, she co-chairs the Arthur W. Page Society’s diversity and inclusion committee.\nDr. Ford earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University\, a master’s degree from University of Maryland at College Park\, and her doctorate from Southern Illinois at Carbondale. \nMenu\nChicken Marsala\, chef’s choice of sides and veggies with warm rolls and red velvet cake for dessert. A choice of salad\, with or without meat\, is also available. Make your selection when registering\, and be sure to pick up your salad ticket upon checking in for the luncheon if you choose that option. \nRSVP Policy\nAll RSVPs for lunch meetings must be made by 5 p.m. on MONDAY of the week of a meeting. After that time\, members and guests will need to call Sara Hunt at (804) 994-1120 to see if space is still available or to be put on a waiting list if needed. Please RSVP early in order to ensure that you are included in the headcount for lunch! If you register as a guest and later determine that you cannot attend\, please contact Sara Hunt\, chapter administrator\, at admin@prsarichmond.org. You must cancel prior to three business days in advance of the meeting to be eligible for a refund. If you cancel after that deadline\, you will still be responsible for the lunch payment and will be billed if you didn’t already pay online. No-shows will be billed for the lunch.
